My best friend (Brian Austin) and I have been hunting for about 3 weeks when the rut finally got started. Brian was set about 100 yards up a hillside; I was by an empty creek bed as a 7X7 peaked over the hilltop with a bellow. As he lumbered down the hill towards the cows 40 yards to my right, I gave a short cow call. He stopped then slowly began moving in my direction. Still about 50 yards out and with me behind a tree, he didn’t seem taken by the Bryan’s bugling. He was more interested in the “Cow behind the Tree”. As he rounded the tree I came to full draw. It’s amazing how they can hear the littlest noise, especially at 10 feet. He took off like a shot and ran into the thick timber.
Soon I saw yet another bull headed my way. As I watched him approach I asked “Please Lord have him travel the same path”. As he got about to the same place as the 7X7, I drew again. My Guardian bow put the arrow right where it was meant to be! It hit both lungs & the heart. He took about 5 steps, I cow called, he stopped, turned his head towards me and fell like a ton of bricks.
